Avery joined the Acquafredda lab in 2026 as a RIOS intern, focusing her research on bacterial source tracking around aquaculture sites in New Jersey. During the internship, Avery deployed a cohort of ribbed mussels (Geukensia demissa) within Barnegat Bay and collected water samples from four surrounding sites to track changes in bacterial levels. Using DNA sequencing techniques, she analyzed the bacterial communities at these sites and inferred mussel-based bioremediation. Avery will graduate from Wake Forest University in 2028 with a B.A. in Environmental Science.
